Professor Sikandar Aftab Published Groundbreaking Research in the Prestigious Journal ACS Nano

Professor Sikandar Aftab from Department of Intelligent Mechatronics Engineering recently published groundbreaking research in the prestigious journal ACS Nano (https://doi.org/10.1021/acsnano.3c03593) as a leading and corresponding author. In this work, he and his collaborator made a remarkable discovery, revealing mechanical distortion-induced bulk photovoltaic behavior in a two-dimensional (2D) material, MoTe2. This behavior is a result of the phase transition and broken inversion symmetry in MoTe2. Importantly, their findings have far-reaching implications as they eliminate the need for both built-in potential and space-time inhomogeneity, opening new avenues for efficient photovoltaic cell development within a single material. According to him, in this type of case, no p-n junction interface is required, and a photovoltaic effect (similar to solar cells) can be achieved in a single material. The current findings suggest a straightforward method for fabricating optoelectronic devices with strain gradient phenomena. Based on these findings, ultrathin 2D TMDs may be capable of producing high-efficiency solar cells; however, further development, such as large area growth for high efficiency, is required before they can be used at an industrial level.

Furthermore, in 2023, he published as a leading and corresponding author more than 22 articles in prestigious journals. These journals include Advanced Materials, Small, Advanced Functional Materials, Chemical Engineering Journal, TrAc Trends in Analytical Chemistry, Laser and Photonic Reviews, Advanced Materials Technologies, and many others. Also, he has co-authored over 50 research articles (2023) in international collaboration work.
