Introduction

Sejong’s Painting major is divided into two concentrations, Korean and Western painting. Students can major in either one of them according to their interests. We aim to foster capable and creative artists by teaching them both the theory and practical skills involved in the art field. We offer related liberal arts courses, practical skills training courses, and theory courses, thereby achieving extensive professional art education. Following the studies of the basic foundations of painting, students in the Western painting concentration practice the professional coursework of water color painting, oil painting, sculpture research, drawing, and studio works, while those in the Korean painting concentration practice the professional coursework of oriental color painting, oriental ink painting, figure painting, drawing, and studio works. In addition, calligraphy, print techniques, and sculpture are offered as elective courses. In terms of theory education, various courses touching on the history of the oriental arts, Western arts, and Korean arts, as well as aesthetics, contemporary arts theory, and art criticism are offered to support the creative artistic mind. Through these courses, we try to encourage our students to learn not only the foundations of art but also the trends of Western arts. Based on this, they are expected to deepen their abilities of creative expression and spirit, which combined with their experimental spirit, will allow them to acquire and further develop our national, traditional, and independent painting spirit.

Career Path after Graduation

After studying painting in depth or other painting-related subjects (such as Korean art history, oriental and Western art history, aesthetics, art or curating, art therapy, fashion design, etc.) our graduates can find job opportunities in colleges, art museum, galleries, or engage in related occupations. In addition, they can organize individual exhibitions, apply for art-related competitions, or participate in exhibitions on the career path of a full-time artist. In addition, our students can earn a secondary teacher's certificate while they are enrolled or they can pursue a career in teaching art by enrolling in our graduate school of education and obtaining a teaching certificate.
