Sejong University places in the top 10 for 6 subjects with 2022 World University Rankings. It was announced by Times Higher Education (THE), which is a British higher education evaluation institution. THE World University Rankings, which targets more than 1,500 universities around the world, is an annual evaluation that uses a total of 13 indicators with five evaluation items, which include educational conditions, research performance, citations, internationalization, and industrial-academic cooperation income. THE World University Rankings is evaluated as having high public trust in the world by applying strict standards that are based on education, research, and internationalization. The six subjects that entered the top 10 with this evaluation include business administration and economy, social science, natural science, life science, computer science, and engineering. Sejong University ranked 3rd in Korea in the business administration and economy. This is a steady rise in the ranking from 4th in 2020 and 5th in 2019. Sejong University also ranked 126th to 150th in the world rankings, which indicates an excellent performance. In 2007, the Faculty of Business Administration acquired the world's most prestigious certification, which is the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), and it was the 4th institution certified in Korea. The Faculty of Business Administration has been honored with three consecutive certifications by re-acquiring certifications in 2012 and 2017. The Graduate School of Business Administration is also accelerating its internationalization, which is due to 40 international students entering the school every year in order to obtain an MBA degree. The Department of Economics has been operating a learning space, which is called the E-Room, since 2002. This is a place where the students can study and communicate with their professors any time. The E-Room provides practical help for the students' career and self-development from support for certificates, such as a CPA, a licensed customs agent, and a tax accountant. The social science ranked fourth in Korea, which received 90 points. It is the highest score among the domestic universities in the citations category. Sejong University's social science has already been recognized for its excellent theses, which include 1st place in Korea for four consecutive years from 2018 to 2021 in the Leiden Rankings. The Leiden Rankings evaluate world universities based on the quality of their theses. In addition, Sejong University’s College of Hospitality and Tourism Management was recognized for its excellence both at home and abroad by ranking 1st in Korea and 40th in the world in the 2021 QS World University Rankings according to the field. The natural science rose from 6th last year to 4th this year, and it ranked 201st-250th in the world. The life science has shown a steady upward trend in recent years, which ranked 13th in Korea in 2019, 9th in 2020, and 5th this year. Sejong University’s College of Life Science has world-class research activities, an excellent faculty, and the only carbohydrate material research institute in Korea. It also has global research competitiveness via joint cooperation with international research institutes, such as the Whistler Center for Carbohydrate Research at Purdue University, USA. The computer science ranked 6th for 2 consecutive years, which include this year and last year. The computer science rose from 151st to 175th last year to 126th to 150th this year in the world rankings. Sejong University was selected for the SW-oriented university project by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning in 2015, so the university is training creative and convergence talents in order to lead the 4th industrial revolution via differentiated education, such as SW coding education for all students, SW convergence interdisciplinary major, SW intensive curriculum, and SW hackathon. Sejong University has been developing and providing all educational contents based on this, which includes textbooks and syllabi that customized to each major and level. In addition, the self-developed online coding evaluation system is used for the coding practice education for all students. The engineering ranked 9th in Korea and 176th to 200th in the world. College of Engineering provides systematic courses in order to encourage students to research and learn the basics, core theories, and skills in the field of engineering. The 1st and 2nd year students are taking basic courses, such as liberal arts, computer education, and foreign language classes, whereas the 3rd and 4th year students are required to complete core major courses for each major. In addition, a dual major program is available in order to nurture convergence talents, and an engineering certification system for practical talents is also conducted. Sejong University ranked 81st in Asia and 11th in Korea in the 2022 QS Asian University Rankings that is published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), which is a UK global university evaluation institute. Although the Asian rankings of Korean universities remained the same or dropped in this evaluation compared to the previous year, Sejong University recorded a steady upward trend, which included moving two steps up from 83rd in Asia last year and moving one step up from 12th in the domestic rankings. The number of citations per paper showed that the research ability ranked 28th, which is 25 steps up from 53rd position in Asia last year and 3rd in Korea. In addition, the ratio of foreign teachers rose to 79th in Asia and 6th in Korea, which indicates that Sejong University is establishing itself as a global central university that is beyond an excellent domestic university. A Sejong University official said, “All members of our university have been united and put in tremendous effort in order to improve the quality of education and research as well as revitalize the graduate school. Sejong University will become one of the top 100 global prestigious private schools in the future.” |
