The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Drone Facility


Sejong University has various spaces for academic research. The unmanned aerial vehicle drone facility has the latest technology that is necessary for research in the rapidly changing aviation era. According to the purpose of the indoor and outdoor research, projects are being actively conducted in three spaces.


▲ Guided Navigation Control Lab


What kind of space is it?

The Guided Navigation Control Lab is a place that is used to verify performance that is related to guidance, navigation, and control of unmanned aerial vehicle drones. This is a space where a test devise for Hardware In the Loop Simulation (HILS) test, power test, and harsh test are gathered. The laboratory is located on the 1st floor of Chungmu-gwan.


What do you study?

We develop a self-developed flight computer-based flight control algorithm. We verified the algorithm using the driving part power test and HILS test equipment. The quality verification and testing of the navigation sensors are conducted here in cooperation with companies. We are conducting research in order to advance to integrated flight control technology with safety.


What is your future direction?

We are trying to develop an unmanned aerial vehicle drone with a high performance, high stability, and high reliability. Along with research on indoor unmanned aerial vehicle drones, we plan to increase the technology level of the guided navigation control. In the future, we will further expand the utilization plan according to the purpose of the flight performance test and the certification space.

What kind of space is it?

The group flying flight indoor flight test site is a place where various autonomous group flying tests are conducted indoors in real time. The flights can be conducted even if GPS is not allowed. It was established in 2019 for indoor flight tests of unmanned aerial vehicles drones in the absence of GPS. The flight test site is located on the 11th floor of the Gwanggaeto-gwan.


What do you study?

We study distributed the autonomous group flying technology of many small drones. We also study a group drone complex operation system in order to study the drone group technology. Research is being conducted with the goal of maintaining a strong group formation and reducing the tracking errors that make up the formation.


What is your future direction?

The group flying research has recently been active. We are going to conduct research in order to develop a distributed group autonomous flight algorithm and a group flight intelligent control that is suitable for the latest technology. We plan to continuously utilize the space for safe and robust system design research.


▲ Outdoor Flight Test Site


What kind of space is it?

The outdoor flight test site is a space for testing the autonomous flight performance of unmanned aerial vehicle drones. The flight tests are conducted in this space in order to see if the drones can land accurately and avoid collisions. This place is located on the rooftop of Sejong Cyber University’s Mubang Hall. 


What do you study?

We conduct research about the situations regarding the autonomous flights of unmanned aerial vehicle drones. Skills, such as coping with failure situations in the driving unit, precise landing on landing platforms, and obstacle avoidance are required. We analyze the detailed flight control algorithm that is considered for autonomous flight. An outdoor flight test site is being used as a means of verifying the algorithm via flight tests.


What is your future direction?

We plan to conduct various autonomous flight tests with unmanned aerial vehicles drones. We also take into account the development into a form that can perform flight performance certification tests properly. In the future, we plant to use it as a certification facility for autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles of various sizes and shapes.
