A Preview of the Campus: Soon to be Transformed

2026.01.08 190

Our university has begun full-scale campus redevelopment. The university is in the process of demolishing Mozart Hall, which has occupied its present location for a long time, and the construction of Chanha-gwan is being promoted in its place. In addition, the Aejihoen Complex, which is an advanced research and development (R&D) facility, is planned to be built at Aejiheon Pond and its surrounding area. We visited the Construction Development Division of the Campus Development Office, which is working to renovate the campus, for an interview due to the growing expectations among university members for the new campus renovations.

Q. The campus development is simultaneously proceeding in multiple directions. Is there a specific purpose for this campus reorganization?

A. We set future-oriented educational environment innovation as our core development goal in regards to cultivating creative talented individuals and lead promising future fields. We achieved various outcomes based on this, such as the establishment of advanced departments, curriculum reorganization, and the expansion of admission capacity. We aim to continue sustainable development. We are promoting the construction of educational research facilities and innovation growth facilities in order to address the educational space shortage that resulted from this situation. This project goes beyond simple space expansion. Its purpose is to qualitatively improve the university's educational and research environment and establish a foundation in order to strengthen our capacity to respond to the future society.

Q. What kind of building is the new Chanha-gwan' that will open?

A. Chanha-gwan is an educational research facility that is being constructed on the site where old buildings, such as Mozart Hall were demolished. This facility is planned to be built with 4 basement floors, 6 above-ground floors, and a total floor area of approximately 8,900㎡, and it will be utilized as a space for education and research in advanced technology fields. This project was conducted in order to resolve the shortage of science and engineering research space and secure comfortable and modern lecture spaces. The old buildings have currently been demolished completely, and we are preparing for full-scale new construction work. If the construction proceeds as planned, new educational and research spaces will be provided in the second half of 2027.

Q. Are you aware that the news of constructing the Aejiheon Complex, which is an innovation growth facility within our campus, is a hot topic among students?

A. The Aejiheon Complex is a project that is being performed in accordance with Seoul City's revision of the Standards for Establishing and Operating Detailed University Facility Development Plans. Seoul City has established a policy in regards to creating industry-academia-research institute convergence spaces in order to respond to educational environment changes and industrial structure transformation in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Sejong university is also actively promoting the construction of innovation growth facilities, which are in line with the policy. This revision has provided an institutional foundation in order to resolve the problems of limited campus space and high density as well as introduce innovation growth facilities. The Aejiheon Complex will be created as a multi-functional space that goes beyond simple educational space and connects with local communities and businesses. Seoul City's detailed facility development plan decision, which is a revision, has currently been completed, and we are preparing various administrative procedures, which include building permits. The ultimate goals of creating industry-academia-research innovation research spaces, establishing educational and research infrastructure for the cultivation of future talented individuals as well as preparing exhibition and communication spaces for connection with local communities will remain unchanged even if the specific scale or design is possibly partially adjusted in the future.

Q. Are there any other campus development projects that are planned in addition to these projects?

A. The campus is expected to change overall with the construction of the Aejiheon Complex. The new building is planned to be an environmentally friendly and sustainable educational space that targets Green Building Certification Grade 1 (Green Grade 1) and Zero Energy Building standards. We are also planning nature-friendly space creation that preserves symbolic landscape buildings as well as forming green spaces at the university boundaries and interior. We plan to realize an open campus by maintaining the existing main gate for pedestrians only by securing new vehicle entrance and exit routes as well as creating green spaces along the main access roads. These changes will expand pedestrian-centered green spaces, enhance campus vitality, and contribute to developing our university into a space that communicates with the local community.
