Sejong University ranked first in Korea in water resources engineering and 18th worldwide in hospitality and tourism, according to the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by subject. The ranking, released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, evaluates research performance through Web of Science-based indicators and places strong weight on high-impact publications and globally recognized scholars. Recent changes to the methodology place greater weight on research quality through the World Class Output index and international research faculty through the World Class Faculty indicator. In this year’s assessment, Sejong University displayed broad strengths across engineering and natural sciences. Its water resources engineering climbed to first place in Korea this year, while remaining in the 151-200 range globally. The university attributed the improvement to high volumes of Q1 papers, international citations and joint research. Computer science made one of the biggest jumps, entering the 101-150 range globally from 201-300 last year, and rose to second place in Korea. Artificial intelligence and remote sensing appeared as new subject categories this year, with Sejong University ranking sixth and second domestically, respectively. It also maintained its long-recognized strength in hospitality and tourism, placing 18th worldwide and second in Korea. Civil engineering placed in the 101-150 range globally and sixth domestically. The university noted that 16 subjects now rank within Korea’s top 10, including telecommunications, mathematics, environmental engineering, physics and business. "This year's ARWU results reflect the sustained academic efforts of our researchers and the outcomes of ongoing educational innovation," said Sejong University President Eom Jong-hwa. "We will continue to strengthen our global research capacity and cultivate the knowledge and talent needed to lead future society." |
