Ranked 3rd in Korea for Two Consecutive Years in ‘2025-2026 US News Global Universities Rankings’

Our university has been ranked 3rd in Korea for two consecutive years in the US News & World Report's 2025-2026 Best Global Universities Rankings. The world university ranking for Sejong University was 238th, which rose three places from last year.


Our university has recorded steady improvement, which began from 629th place in 2021, to 506th in 2022, 397th in 2023, 241st in 2024, and the 238th in 2025. The domestic university ranking for Sejong also notably improved from 7th place in 2023 to 3rd place in 2024, and the university obtained 3rd place in Korea this year.


This year's Best Global Universities Rankings evaluated 2,346 universities from 105 countries worldwide, and it ultimately ranked 2,250 universities. 


The evaluation uses 13 indicators that include Global Research Reputation (12.5%), Regional Research Reputation (12.5%), Publications (10%), Books (2.5%), Conferences (2.5%), Normalized citation impact (10%), Total Citations (7.5%), Number of Publications Among the 10% Most Cited (12.5%), Percentage of Total Publications Among the 10% Most Cited (10%), International Collaboration - Relative to Country (5%), International Collaboration (5%), Number of Highly Cited Papers Among the Top 1% Most Cited in Their Respective Field (5%), and Percentage of Total Publications Among the Top 1% Most Highly Cited Papers (5%).


The evaluation in particular places a significant amount of weight on research reputation and citation counts and ratios, so it is regarded as an indicator that can quantitatively measure a university's research capabilities. The Global Research Reputation evaluates the academic reputation of outstanding universities worldwide regardless of region, whereas the Regional Research Reputation reflects expert assessments of universities within a relevant region. Both indicators are calculated by comprehensively collecting opinions from domestic and international scholars over the past five years, which confirmed our university's excellent academic reputation.


The following are detailed rankings of Sejong University with respect to the category. Our university was ranked 20th worldwide in regards to the International Collaboration Relative to Country category, and Sejong also achieved 38th place globally in the Percentage of Total Publications Among the 10% Most Cited category, which shows strength in research/publication indicators and solidifies our reputation as a research-centered university. Sejong also achieved 89th place worldwide in the Percentage of total Publications Among the Top 1% Most Highly Cited Paper category by receiving high evaluation in terms of high-quality research achievements.


The global rankings by individual academic subject include the following. 35th place in water resources, 51st place in mathematics, 70th place in electrical and electronic engineering, 81st place in environmental engineering technology, 99th place in artificial intelligence, 104th place in civil engineering, 109th place in computer science, 111th place in engineering, 111th place in green sustainable science technology, 152nd place in chemical engineering, place 157th in energy and fuels, place 176th in social sciences and public health, 194th place in environment/ecology, 249th place in physical chemistry, 275th place in materials science, 301st place in nanoscience and nanotechnology, 338th place in physics, 358th place in agricultural sciences, 394th place in geosciences, and 505th place in chemistry. These rankings demonstrate our university’s international competitiveness across academic fields..


The Korean rankings include the following. 1st place in water resources, 1st place in mathematics, 1st place in electrical and electronic engineering, 1st place in environmental engineering technology, 1st place in green sustainable science technology, 4th place in artificial intelligence, 2nd place in civil engineering, 3rd place in engineering, 2nd place in social sciences and public health, 2nd place in environment/ecology, 4th place in geosciences, 5th place in computer science, 6th place in chemical engineering, 7th place in physics, 8th place in agricultural sciences, 9th place in energy and fuels, 11th place in materials science, 13th place in physical chemistry, 17th place in chemistry, and 19th place in nanoscience and nanotechnology.


These achievements go beyond simple ranking improvements. They are interpreted as the results of strategic research investment and expanded international cooperation. Our university has concentrated on strengthening research capabilities in future core technology fields, such as AI, eco-friendly technology, and water resources, and Sejong University has steadily expanded joint research networks with leading universities domestically and internationally. The simultaneous improvements in research quality and impact through the establishment of global research platforms and joint project implementation have in particular been numerically confirmed in this evaluation.


Our university's global competitiveness is also proven in other world university evaluations. Sejong University achieved 7th place in Korea and 200th-251st globally in the 2025 THE World University Rankings that was announced by Times Higher Education (THE), which is a British higher education evaluation institution. Our university has been ranked 1st in Korea for two consecutive years from 2023 in the 2024 Leiden Ranking, which is based on paper quality, and Sejong ranked 223rd in the world.

The US News & World Report began evaluating American universities and graduate schools in 1983, and it boasts high credibility by being the oldest news magazine in the United States.
